Baby Midland Painted Turtle (Chrysemys picta) Location: North America Range: Southern Quebec and southern Ontario to Tennessee, northwest Georgia, and extreme northeastern Alabama
At this time it's shell was no bigger than 8.5cm lengthwise. Madison, WI
This is, quite simply, a stunning specimen of wildlife photography. The composition is absolutely spot on, showing enough of the creature's surrounds to give a sense of context in a way that also gives the photography a proper artistic documentary feel that would not see it amiss in any wildlife magazine or as a print on someone's wall.
The focus and depth of field are just right. The detail of the turtle's body comes through very clear and leads you to examine every bit of it that is on show. That is exactly what this kind of shot should do. It is not only a photograph of the turtle, it is an examination of it as a wild animal. The focus is, though, not so sharp that the picture looks artificial and 'digital'. It looks natural and is easy to look at.
It is a well-timed captured showing the turtle 'posed' as well all imagine them to be; head up gazing at the sun, its surroundings, or maybe even the photographer.
All in all, this is a gorgeous capture of a gorgeous creature and is a textbook example of the genre.
